Councillors are urging the county to “go for broke” and ensure that Kilkenny secures a full university faculty as the campaign for a technical university for the South East progresses.

The application for the technical university has been submitted to the relevant education authorities, Kilkenny County Council members confirmed at their meeting on Monday.

“I would urge the (county) manager in his meetings with Waterford IT and IT Carlow to go for broke triyng to ensure that we get a faculty of the university in Kilkenny,” said Cllr Paul Cuddihy (FG).

Cllr Martin Brett (FG), who along with Cllr Tomas Breathnach (Lab) had submitted a notice of motion in support of the application, said it was “the key to job creation and a sustainable economy for the region.”

“Hopefully we will not have to wait much longer to have a university for the South East,” Cllr Brett said.

“I would like to think this is a great start for the South East,” added Cllr Breathnach.

Cllr Pat Crowley (FG) urged those leading the way in the process to consider that “there is also room for the humanities side (of a technical university).”

“If you do get the go-ahead, remember that it is not just technology,” he said.
