Castlecomer Discovery Park opened its new orienteering trails at the weekend, with the support of the Irish Orienteering Association.

The launch took place on Sunday, May 12 and was coordinated by Waterford Orienteers, who hosted the penultimate round of the south-east orienteering league in the splendid setting of the 80-acre woodland park.

Support was at hand from the Irish Orienteering Association team, who helped newcomers discover the excitement and challenge of orienteering. The three new permanent orienteering courses, (1-3km, at 1 to 5,000 scale) were mapped by cartographer Pat Healy who volunteered his expertise to mapping the courses over several days at the Discovery Park in March.

“I came here over twenty years ago to see if it was suitable for walks, but left thinking there wasn’t a hope because it was so overgrown,” he said, having returned to discover the development that has taken place at the park since his first visit.

The usual blue, green, light green and red courses are on offer and opened immediately after the launch. Beginners are welcome at a fee of €2 per map. All those who take part are encouraged to make this a family day out and explore some of the park’s great amenities, including the Tree Top Adventure Walk which was launched a year ago this week.
