CITY CHURCH BOUGHT BY STATE Friday, 08 January 2010 |
| |
| The Church of Ireland has been paid €1.1m by the State for St Mary’s Church in Kilkenny city, which has been deteriorating for the past twenty years and has not been used as a church for forty years. The thirteenth century church includes a graveyard containing what have been described as internationally important funerary monuments and it is hoped that those damaged can be restored and the whole building declared a national monument. The State’s taking over of the church and graveyard resulted from the Church of Ireland having insufficient funds to maintain it. Local TD John McGuinness has suggested that it might become a museum of Norman history. |
